5 things i love

Aug 29, 2013

Happy Friday, guys! I'm back with my "5 things i love" feature and happy to hear you enjoy these types of posts because I really love putting them together. I've been dreaming up all sorts of new inspirations for myself lately. In fact, yesterday I bought a gorgeous new artist's journal and I'm hoping to start scrap booking as a way to collect all my beloved inspirations. I'm excited, it'll be fun! In any case, here's a peek at what I'm loving lately...

1). I just ordered a beautiful Ikat pencil skirt from Cori Lynn's gorgeous shop. However, now I have my eye on this one too. Um, a pencil skirt with anchors on it? How unbelievably adorable!
2). I currently have one tattoo but I'm hoping to get another. Since I'm still deciding on what I want... I thought I'd play around with this fun hand drawn camera tattoo from Tattly. So perfect for a photographer lover like me!
3). This DIY is all kinds of fabulous. The gold polka dots are just the cutest + you could add them to anything... a canvas for your gallery wall, curtains or even throw pillows. Here's a link to the original post from the paper mama.
4). Is there anything sweeter than handwritten thank you notes?! I'm loving these ones from Moorea Seal's new shop and everything else for that matter! Moorea has curated such a stunning collection of items - be sure to take a peek. You won't be disappointed!
5). My love for Madewell runs deep, very deep. And this cross body bag is so freakin' rad, I don't know what more to say. Love it, want it!

everyday moments

This week, I've been inspired to pull out my camera and capture everyday moments. Photography has always been my favourite medium for expressing myself, and it's my intention to start doing it a little more often. I feel like there's a certain magic that exists in finding something special in what would otherwise be an ordinary moment. I love seeking out subtle details, a certain mood and working with natural light. I must admit, I often catch myself daydreaming about traveling the world and documenting it all with my camera. Wouldn't that be the life?!...

Other than that, our week has been blissfully slow... we've had a few lately, not complaining. Martin's been enjoying his last week off before returning to work. The weather has been perfectly drizzly and cool. We've spent our mornings reading our favourite novels, drinking peppermint tea and listening to jazz. Our usual view of evergreens have been ever so slightly covered in fog. Picture perfect, really. And yesterday we celebrated our 8 year wedding anniversary (we've been together for 15)... I'll be sure to post about our day soon. xo

Outfit details:
Trench - Gap
Dress - c/o Jacob
Shoes - Jeffrey Campbell (similar)

A new haircut, new layout for my photos... isn't change so refreshing?! Lately, I'm all about mixing things up and trying something new; my closet is no exception. I can't wait to share my outfit photos with you guys over the next several weeks. I have so many new looks in store!! Today, I'm teaming up with Jacob Canada to showcase + style one of their gorgeous dresses from their newest collection. No matter the season, I'm a dress girl through-and-through and I can't wait to transition this beauty into fall. I already have a million different ideas for how to re-style this fabulous dress. And, let's take a moment to appreciate green. Yeah?! It's probably my favourite colour of the moment! xo

summer nights

Aug 24, 2013

i don't normally post on the weekend. but i'm trying to be a little more spontaneous with my posting. usually, i love schedules and having everything figured out down to the very last detail; however, that's been feeling a little too rigid for me lately. so, right, here i am posting on a saturday. these photos were taken earlier this month, right before i got my hair-cut. i plan to be back later next week with outfit photos so you can finally see this elusive haircut i keep nattering on about.

martin & i have been spending as many of our summer evenings down by the ocean as we possibly can. our regular routine consists of: healthy smoothies (chocolate banana soy for me), a bench under our favourite tree, scout (our extra fluffy & happy go lucky pooch), camera, and most importantly... mushing our toes into the grass. oh summer, you've been so very good to us. i can't believe martin's back at work the following week (he's a teacher). nuts, this summer has been flying by. you can bet we'll be doing all that we can to live it up and end this one off with a bang!

red lentil and carrot soup

Aug 22, 2013

a slightly informal recipe post on the blog today... i'm still trying to kick this darn flu and feeling kind of whiny about it. like really, am i really spending the last precious moments of summer in bed?! apparently, yes. in any case, here's a look at what i'm up to today. making soup, sounds about right. i've been a bit slow with posting recipes lately, but i can't say we've been cooking too much this summer. mostly just chomping on lots of salads and making simple stir fry's. however, when the soup craving calls, it can not be ignored + this one is fabulously easy to make. oh and hey, meet my kitchen helpers! ;)

you'll need:

2 adorable kitchen helpers, hehe
3 tablespoons olive oil
3 medium to large carrots, chopped
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, chopped
1/2 tbsp fresh rosemary leaves
1/2 cup split red lentils, rinsed
3 cups vegetable stock

heat oil in a saucepan. then add your carrots, onion and garlic with rosemary and saute until lightly golden. next add lentils and veggie stock. bring to a boil. cover and simmer until carrots & lentils are tender. yay, your soup's all done! now, you can either leave as is or blend your soup with a handheld blender in your original soup pot. lastly, if you find your soup a bit too thick, you can add extra veggie stock. garnish with fresh parsley, and salt & pepper to taste. mmmm!!

i found this recipe on vegweb, my favourite go-to for vegetarian dishes. see the original recipe here!

recently from my iphone

Aug 20, 2013

1. quick snap before heading out for dinner and wearing my new forever 21 dress 2. ocean walk, always 3. scout, our favourite little adventurer 4. sushi date with my hubby

is that the sound of little blogging crickets? haha, yup, it just might be. i had lofty plans for this week but then a sore throat happened, and it brought with it the most relentless insomnia... my two unwelcome guests, as i've appropriately named them. also, you may be scratching your head and thinking, hey, things look a little different around here. well, that's what happens when your husband is out of town and you have time on your hands + a good glass of chardonnay. yes, i chose coding over going out & socializing. so it goes. don't pretend you haven't done the same. ;)

other high hopes for this week include: um, what happened to my weekly exercise plan? flu or no flu. yoga is on the horizon. as is meeting up with my girlfriend for snacks and wine. hello sabrina! the most adventurous and fun loving gal you'll ever meet. she's spent the last year traveling and teaching in shanghai, and i'm so looking forward to seeing her beautiful face.

lastly, with much excitement, i installed disqus on the blog. yay, right?! each week, you guys leave such wonderful comments and i feel like we should keep the party going. so that's me. what's going on with you?

OUR ANNUAL OCEAN-SIDE PICNIC

Aug 14, 2013

finally, finally... our summer is starting to unwind and martin & i are finding a nice little groove for ourselves. because honestly, this summer has been a little nuts. we've been working seven days a week (most weeks) and sometimes well into the wee-hours. 12 hour work days? yikes. in celebration of this week's slowing schedule we've been treating ourselves to some good summer livin': picnics, afternoons at our local pub... and, i even made a trip to the hair salon for a little chop, chop. i went a lot shorter. yay! i'll be sure to share photos with you early next week.
heading out for a picnic to this sweet little spot has turned into such a fun + annual tradition for us. talk about ultimate relaxation too. we had such an awesome time sprawling out on our blanket, eating the most delicious salad, and staring up at the trees. i also caught up on a little reading. i just picked up a new book called "roadie: my life on the road with coldplay." a really fun and light read. martin snacked on some blackberries - our neighborhood is surrounded with them. and scout? well, he slept and mooched food of us. apparently, he digs salad! ;)
outfit details:
denim jacket - h&m (similar + a great price!)
tee - gap
maxi (worn as skirt) -  old navy
cross body - c/o handbag heaven
shoes - gap

WHAT I WORE

Aug 12, 2013

brights and stripes make for such an easy + summery outfit. i received this skirt from cori lynn early last year and it's proved to be such a timeless wardrobe staple. i'd love to style it again for this fall with a sheer ruffled polka dot blouse and some vintage inspired heels. perfect for a blogger meet up (we're doing one in september, yay) or for an evening out with my honey.
other than that, this weekend i spent a bit of time transitioning my wardrobe. just a little bit. pulling out light sweaters, skirts and my favourite fall dresses. i also (nerd alert) organized my upcoming fall clothes and looks in a private pinterest board... and why stop there? i decided to get my geek on even more and organized all my blog content for august and september. anyone else type a? feel free to spill. no judgement here! ;)
outfit details:
cardigan - old navy
skirt - c/o cori lynn
spiked bracelet - stella & dot
clutch - aldo shoes
shoes - jeffrey campbell (fave t-strap heel, here & here)
