Weekend Style | Holiday Shopping

Nov 29, 2014

We're excitedly waking up to a beautiful & snowy winter wonderland this morning and I love it! I'll be cozied up to our fireplace, sipping hot chocolate and wearing my weekend uniform. Lately, I've been all about the loose tanks, skinnies and cozy cardigans. Plus, I've been living in my suede tasseled booties. A new favourite for sure! What's everyone up to for this Saturday & Sunday?! We're visiting with Martin's nephews, then hopefully putting up our tree (I'm making this garland) and possibly going on a fun day trip. Yay, weekend, let's do this!

Happy Thanksgiving & Thank You!

Nov 26, 2014

{image via: instagram}

Well, it looks like during times of emotional duress (aka dental surgery)... I turn to blog design instead of food. Ha! But it was meant to be - because I love the end result! I've been meaning to create a "seasonal" feel & interchangeable image/banner for the blog, and this is perfect! As for my impending dental surgery? Firstly, many thank you's for all your sweet words! I've been officially booked in for Tuesday, and yes I'm a ball of nerves, but mostly I can't wait to have it all behind me. Silver lining, right?! And of course, hey US friends, Happiest Thanksgiving! Whether you'll be with friends, family or your fur babes... I wish you a day of rest, wonderful food, and lots of love!

Weekly Wrap Up

Nov 21, 2014

Wrapping up this week is a bit of a mixed bag. The upside is that I'm seeing my beloved pals Lynn and Cee for wine & girly chats tonight. Plus, Martin & I have lots of fun Xmas things planned for the weekend. As for the downside? I'm possibly going in for dental surgery on Tuesday (one of three) and I'm getting unbearably anxious about it. When it comes to the dentist? I'm honestly the biggest stress case! Luckily, I'll be sedated but I'll definitley be sore and swollen for several days after, and obviously, not looking forward to that one bit. If you have any positive words. Please share! I'm honestly needing to hear them - big time!!

Photos from our week: 1) Made a new print for my office and love it so much! 2) We had so much fun photographing winter themed photos for the blog! 3) Hot chocolate, and browsing the holiday isle!! 4) Lighthouse exploring. Always so much fun!

Favourites from around the web:

I've clicked over to this post countless times... so excited for Tieka + cutest photos!!
I wrote a post for the "Common Creative" blog and loved sharing about my life as an entrepreneur!
This aztec open cardigan is gorgeous. Perfect with leggings & cami's for cozy nights in!
Cee is hosting the Keltie Leanne Jewelry event on Saturday, November 29th in Yaletown. So very proud of her!
I need a plaid scarf in my life - this one is so great and a fab bargain!

Inspired by: The holidays and finding a slower groove. I've been working a little too much lately and I'm excited to find rest, plus fine tune my business plan for 2015.

On the horizon: Aside from my icky dentist visit. I'm excited to start baking, decorating and doing lots of holiday shopping + vacation planning. We're doing a few local trips this year: Whistler, Sunshine Coast and Bowen Island. The countdown is on!!

Daily Wears | Parka Jackets & Lace

Nov 19, 2014

Perhaps it's the Canadian girl in me... but I love pairing a parka with a pretty lace dress. When it comes to personal style, I definitley have a thing for pairing the unexpected! Like, a pretty statement necklace with Martin's over-sized sweater + rolled up jeans, or a floaty maxi dress with a shrunken plaid shirt. So much fun! What are your favourite and unexpected pairings? And speaking of personal style... for this fall & winter it's my goal to do a little bit more style blogging on "By The Shore!" Hope you guys don't mind! ;) I have several outfits I'm excited to share and I've kind of been bit by the personal style bug. So yup, I'm just going with it!

Daily Wears | Late Fall Cozy

Nov 16, 2014

Did I say late fall?! Bloody hell - it's feeling more like early winter lately. It's cold, am I right?!! I'm noticing many of you're already getting hit with snow via instagram. I'm sure we'll be following suit very soon! But honestly, a white Christmas is something I never mind. This year Martin & I have plans to head up to Whistler for some snowy couples photos. Can't wait! Naturally, I'm already planning outfits and this image is my jumping off point... I love the idea of wearing a winter themed floral crown, over-sized knits and a long flowy dress. As for today's outfit? This is my... in a pinch, off to run errands but still want to look chic outfit. My personal mantra? When in doubt, put a trench on it! ;)

A Few Favourites

Nov 15, 2014

Firstly, thank you so much for all your positive feedback on my new "blog workshop" series. I'm already hard at work on the next one (branding, a personal favourite!) and can't wait to share that next month. Today, I'm popping in to share a few of my favourite things... these are all from my new pinterest board "my closet" where you can see what I'm buying and adding to my closet. Fun, right?! I'm really vibing with a boho aesthetic at the moment, mixed with rustic and organic accessories. Like that gorgeous Herkimer diamond ring set in rose gold - oh my gosh, love at first sight! And yes, hats, we tight! ;)

Blog Workshop | Creating Content

Nov 13, 2014

Hello, and welcome to my new blog series "Blog Workshop" so excited to be kicking this off! I honestly can't believe I've been blogging for 4 years, um hello, where did the time go?! During that time, I've had the opportunity to team up with amazing brands, travel for conferences, appear in magazines and have met so many of my favourite bloggers. A more gracious and supportive group - I have yet to meet! Admittedly, I've slowed down my blogging career over the past few years as my own business has grown! However... my love for it is as strong as ever and I'm thrilled to be sharing what I've learned over the past few years. Today, I'm chatting about creating content and how to find the "you" in blogging!

Stay true // In the beginning... I put a lot of pressure on myself. Pressure to keep up with outfit posts, shopping for new outfits and sometimes even missing out on time with friends because I was so swept up with the blog. I now know that was wrong and I've developed a much more laid back attitude over the years. Creating content and staying true, will never come from putting pressure on ourselves. Instead, I've learned to "check in" and then work on the blog from there. Some weeks, I'm all about outfits posts, other weeks I love creating content like this... or I'm more inspired to vlog. So remember, above all else - stay true!

Be flexible // Our lives are always changing... jobs become more demanding, or simply our available time becomes limited because of other life commitments. That's totally okay! Firstly, I've learned to blog about my life exactly how it's happening. Cat photos and a few words on my week? If that's all I have time for... then yes! And secondly, I've created a moveable editorial calender. I typically run 4-5 recurring posts and schedule them all at the beginning of the month. Then each Monday I check in, and if need be, I move them around to suite my mood. The only exception, being sponsored posts, of course!

Hone in on your passions // As you know, I've been helping companies & independent business owners develop their blogs and I'm always amazed at the fact that people aren't sure what to blog about! Simple I say - start with your passions! What do you love? Perhaps you love restoring vintage furniture, cooking, sewing, photography, painting or love making your own clothes! Start there, define what you love, and build blog content from your place of passion. Remember it's your blog, and you get to decide on what you want to blog about. Skies the limit! Plus, the upside is you'll find opportunities in the niche you're most interested in!

Define your theme // As much as I hate putting myself in a box. I believe there is merit in finding a niche for yourself. Yes, at the end of the day you can blog about anything... but, you'll want your blog to have an overall vibe. Maybe you're budget focused, vintage, high fashion or just super crafty. It's important to pick your theme and then build from there. Take a moment and think about the kind of blogs you like to read and what kind of readers you're hoping to attract? When I started my first blog "Girl & Closet" I sat down and wrote out my mission statement and defined the overall purpose of my blog. It honestly helped a lot and I believe it grew quickly because of that!

Create 3-4 recurring posts // There is liberation in knowing what you're going to be blogging about and I think routine is well received by readers too. I typically aim for 4-5 recurring posts and then 1-2 wild cards each month. I focus on daily style, adventures, helpful posts like this one, weekly wrap ups, wishlists and home decor! I think the great thing about recurring posts is they allow you to maintain your vision and keep you accountable. Plus, I never get stuck in the "I don't have anything to blog about" rut. So, yes, bonus! ;)

Brainstorm // Whether you're a seasoned blogger or just starting out. Taking a "time out" as I like to call it and brainstorming is key! Whenever I'm feeling burn out... I always go back to brainstorming! Firstly, I recommend you unplug. I typically love going out in nature, listening to my favourite music, talking it out with a friend or fellow blogger (hi, Cee), creating a mood board, or grabbing a stack of magazines... the last one is great. Magazines are a wealth of fabulous editorial ideas. Try it sometime - you'll be amazed at the results!

Quality over quantity // Personally, I think it's much more effective to invest in one amazing post per week, than create several sub par ones. Think of your blog as your portfolio! I know for myself, I definitley want it to be a collection of my best work! When I look at my favourite bloggers, I would say that is one thing they all have in common. I'm lookin' at you Tieka! ;) They invest their time into building quality over quantity!

Well, that's a wrap, thank you so much for reading the first installment of "Blog Workshop" guys. Next time, I'll be discussing branding - very excited for that one! And, if you have any tips of your own please share - I'm hoping to run a post featuring your fab ideas!! And lastly, if you have any questions about your own blog? Feel free to ask in the comments section. I'm more than happy to lend an ear & offer any advice I can! xo

Over The Weekend

Nov 11, 2014

Although, I cropped these using a square format... the first three are actually taken with my DSLR and then edited using the ABM actions. My current favourites are: malt, willis, and light leak 2 from the folk collection! As you can see, I'm off bed rest, thank god, and mostly kicking my infection! Although, I still need to make sure I don't over do it. But... I've been feeling so repressed from being sick, that yeah, I'm mostly over-doing it. Ha, you know me. Type A for the win! As for the weekend? Really great! I photographed a beautiful & intimate wedding on Saturday + I'm currently working on my photography blog. A long time coming... and I'm soooo very excited to share my work with you - oh so soon. Yay!!! What kind of fun stuff have you guys been up to?!

PS - Happy long weekend to my Canadian friends!!

Weekly Wrap Up

Nov 7, 2014

What a week!! It's been a whole lot of bed rest, unbearable fatigue and a sinus infection that just won't quit. Tired of my whining yet?! ;) Thankfully Netflix, working on my photography blog (I'll share more soon) and lots of yummy homemade soup are cheering me up. When life gives you lemons, well, you better make sure you're rolling with it. Am I right?! In other news, I'm hell bent on getting out of the house this weekend... even if it's just for an hour! I'm dying to wear something other than pj's and I'm need of human interaction. Sheesh!

Photos from our week: 1) J.Crew statement necklaces are my new obsession. Can't wait to style my new beauty up!! 2) Did a photo-shoot which was super rad & fun! 3) Fall is still exploding in our neighbourhood. 4) Living by the ocean and going for long walks?! Bliss!

Jen, of Jen Loves Kev just wrote a fabulous post on health & exercise. Loved her relaxed and encouraging take!
So much love for this Target area rug. Isn't it awesome and incredibly perfect?!
Excited to start a class on visual storytelling via Life, Captured Inc!
Finally bought actions from A Beautiful Mess. I nabbed "The Folk Collection" set. Oh man, SO good!!
Loved this homemade homemade masala chai concentrate via the Free People blog!

Inspired by: Crunching leaves, floppy hats, hot chocolate, mittens and rosy cheeks!

On the horizon: Working on a website for my photography. Yay!!! And getting my new series "Blog Workshop" series up and running... sorry for the delay! Between my flu and work schedule. Yeah, it's been a little nuts around here!!

L'occitane Robson Event

Nov 5, 2014

My apologies for the radio silence on outfit posts these past two weeks, guys! I just finished a 15 day round of antibiotics for my sinus infection... but sadly, it's back, and I'm on bed rest. Again! I have so many cute looks cued up, the fall leaves are in their prime and I'm in bed. But in any case, fingers crossed I'll be up & at em' this weekend and I'll have an outfit post cued up for next week. Today, I'm sharing a few photos from the recent L'occitane Robson event. I've been a long time fan of their expectational line of products and I loved popping in to meet every one in person and have a look at their new store. I was immediately drawn to their gorgeous line up of scents and I'm currently trying their award winning, Immortelle Divine Cream. I'll be sure to keep you posted on how I like it. I have a November favourites video planned for the end of the month! :)

My Goals For November

Nov 3, 2014

Hello... did everyone have an awesome Halloween?! We were pretty quiet this year, my hubby marked assignments for report cards and I managed to stuff my face with candy + watch scary movies. Which is totally a-okay in my books! Today, I thought I'd try something new and post my goals for the month of November. Does anyone else do the same on their blog? If you do, leave a link, I'd love to read what you're hoping to tackle this month!

{image source: little red bowtique, via instagram}

A few goals that are currently near and dear to my heart!

∆ Take a break from social media.
I'm not exactly sure when I became an obsessive social media clicker, but yup, I have! It's bad and needs to stop! So now, I'm only checking my social media feed twice a day, and then signing out. It's helping, alot!

∆ Take a day off and go on a road trip with my honey.
We're so overdue for this one. I'm craving a road trip so I can spend the day doing what I love. Eating yummy food and taking photos... all, freaking, day!

∆ See friends at our favourite pub. Beers, fries and darts. Yes!
This one needs no explanation. Just craving some fun!

∆ Set aside time to clean the house!
Ok, not so near & dear to my heart, but it must be done.

∆ Grab my laptop and spend the morning working from my favourite coffee shop.
Oh man, sometimes working from home all day can really zap my energy. My goal is start going to my favourite coffee shop at least once a week to mix it up!

∆ Set aside time to work on new blog templates for the shop.
I'm learning that if I don't clear my schedule and set aside time, my hopes and projects, just never materialize. So yes, I plan on taking a day to make this goal happen!

∆ Create a new playlist.
Because, new music, always!

∆ Read, learn and rest
I've been learning more about photography, taking classes on personal branding and enjoying the process of learning. Plus, I find it a great to rest and rejuvenate.
